…..yet.
We went into this General Election full of optimism. We stood in lines, waiting to vote. Some of the lines were very long. We got free ink pens. We got free candy for the grandchildren. We got a sticker stating that we voted. But the priceless gift was the freedom to express our preferences for a few elected officials, including our president, and some legislative matters.
But that was Tuesday.
Today we collectively have heavy hearts.
We’re not screaming at the sky or shouting our displeasure. We pray and talk in hushed tones – as we do when there’s a ten pound weight in the pits of our stomachs. The feeling reminds me of how we feel when we get bad news at the doctor. Bad news spelled with a C. It’s not the same feeling as when we have a benign toothache or a broken arm. It feels like cancer feels, when you have no idea what life will be like in the future. Or if you even have a future.
This election has morphed into a big C word. We don’t know what the future will be like, or if we even have a future.
BUT LET ME TELL YOU THE GOOD NEWS!
When Charles Wesley wrote the overflowing feelings in his heart the day he wrote those words, he was overjoyed and nearly speechless with the awesome glories of our God and King, and he tried to put down on paper how God’s glory works in our lives! “Jesus! The name that charms our fears. That bids our sorrows cease, ‘tis music to the sinners’ ears, ‘‘tis life, and health, and PEACE. (Caps are my emphasis.) He breaks the power of canceled sin, He sets the prisoner free; His blood can make the foulest clean; His blood availed for me. Glory to God and praise and love, be ever, ever given by saints below and saints above, the church on earth and heaven.”
My brother or sister, my dear reader, this – this is what is really going on in America this week! The GLORY OF GOD is on full display in the quietness and confidence that all is well in the places that matter the most – which is in our hearts. The church on earth and in heaven is at PEACE. And it feels a lot like how I’ve felt when someone in our family has cancer. We don’t know what the future holds or if we even have a future. But that’s ok because we know the God who lives within us and is our future! He is our Comforter. Comforting us in our times of uncertainty is what He does! And He always does His job well!
