What’s the purpose of studying this? I’ll tell you at the end of this post.
The. Great. Deluge. as viewed from the window of the Ark.
(NOT! This is actually a photo of my humble kitchen window as viewed through my glass cutting board, if I must tell all my secrets.)
A true fact: types and shadows of Jesus Christ are found throughout the entire Bible, especially in the Great Flood, and in particular, what we call Noah’s Ark. The Flood was one of the biggest events in the history of the world, and many things about it pointed forward 4000 years to the Cross of Christ.
Some of the most rugged mountains in America are found in the Rockies. Imagine them covered completely by water.
The FLOOD was D-Day for planet Earth, a devastating, cleansing JUDGEMENT. And praise be to God, the ARK was built for SALVATION. Those are two very obvious facts, no matter what a person believes about the Bible.
Consider the construction of the ARK. It was built as a giant wooden box, six times longer (450 ft) than it was wide. It was equipped with nothing to CONTROL its movements. There were no sails or any type of propulsion, and no rudder for steering.
The entire ship was PITCHED inside and out with a waterproof substance, possibly some type of pine resin which sealed it against moisture.
The ARK was built with THREE FLOORS, although its overall height was four stories high. It had 1,500,000 sq.ft of living space. The first floor held the animals, and scholars believe there was room enough for over 45,000 animals. The second floor was used for storage of the large quantities of provisions needed for the journey. The third floor was outfitted in comfortable living quarters, or ROOMS for the people.
On the bottom floor there was ONE DOOR through which all of the animals and people passed to enter the ARK. And at the very top, most likely all along the length of the boat, there was one WINDOW for light and air. Having no windows on the sides of the structure allowed the ARK to ride low in the water, giving it a great amount of stability.
The Types and Shadows of Jesus in this amazing object lesson included:
The ARK: Jesus Christ is our spiritual salvation. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him, shall not perish but have everlasting life.” St. Jn. 3:16
NO CONTROL ROOM: God is our Captain, Pilot, and Co-Pilot. We TRUST Him to guide us in the ways that we live, think and pray. We rest comfortably in His holiness.
This suddenly reminds me of a small card that my classmates and I were given at times in VBS or Sunday School for prizes. I found an image of it on the internet.
Beneath the illustration was a cross which glowed in the dark. I wish I still had one of those. I used to sit and look very solemnly at them, rubbing my finger over the glittery surfaces of the crosses.
PITCH: We are sealed in Christ to the praise of His glory. Ephesians 1:12-14
THREE FLOORS: This is a type of the work of the Trinity, the Father, Son and Holy Ghost, to provide us eternal life. The Three are known as the Godhead. To separate one of them from the other two robs them all of their glory.
ROOMS (Heb. def. means nests:) There was adequate room for thousands of people on the top floor but only eight occupied the space. Only eight believed the Word of God and were saved. This is a very sad testimony of human nature gone wrong. Thousands heard Noah’s message of the coming destruction and need for repentance of their sins, but only he and his family believed it and entered the ark.
Jesus has the very same message for us today. There is destruction coming but there is plenty of room in His House to escape it. There is absolutely no need for anyone to perish. In the saving Grace of Jesus, there is rest for our souls. He extends the invitation to come and make your “nest” with Him. “Come unto Me all you who labor and are heavily burdened and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn of Me, for I am meek and lowly in heart and ye shall find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Mt. 11:28,19
ONE DOOR: Jesus provides only one door to eternal life and that door is through His saving blood which He shed in our place. He said, “I am the door of the sheep. By Me, if anyone enters in, they will be saved.” St. Jn 10:7-10.
ONE WINDOW for light and air: Jesus is the Light of the world and the giver of Eternal Life. “ “He (Jesus) was the true Light which lighteth every man in the world.” St. Jn. 1:9; and “I am the resurrection and the life….if you believe in Me you will never die.” St. Jn. 11:25,26.
So why, some ask, is the study of the Types and Shadows of Jesus throughout the Bible important? This is why I think its important – because knowledge aids understanding. It’s a little hard to deny the truth when we understand it, and it’s eternally important that we understand that Jesus is the central figure in the entire Bible – the central figure in world history! He is our Creator and we are His prize possesstion. He is our Savior, our ARK of SALVATION. By becoming familiar with the types and shadows of Jesus Christ in the Old Testament and then seeing the fulfillment of them in the New Testament gives unity and credibilty to the Scriptures. Jesus Christ is very obviously present from Genesis to Revelation! To understand that fact is to understand where we come in, in His eyes. He created us for relationship. He saved us from self-extinction (Gen. 6:13) with the Great Flood, and provided an ARK of SALVATION for all those who chose to enter it. In much the same way He also provided a spiritual ark for the spiritual salvation of all who repent, believe and obey Him. He invites everyone to enter His place of rest and safety. Its the GREATEST LOVE STORY EVER!
If you desire to know Jesus Christ as your Friend and Savior, and to enter into His “House of Many ROOMS,” please go to the Bible for your source of truth and read all about His plan of salvation. The book of St. John is a good one to begin with. Also, there is a page listed at the top of my homepage entitled, “Jesus’ Invitation,” with several Scriptures to help you get started.
