The Rearrangers

My mother is a rearranger. About the time I think I can put her dishes away without asking where things belong she rearranges her kitchen again. Also, you never know if the sofa will be against the west wall of the living room or the north wall. Its completely unpredictable. Sometimes it’s even sitting in the middle of the room to form a seating area with the rest of the living room chairs and Daddy’s recliner.

People who know my mother and me, especially my children, say the apple didn’t fall far from the tree. My daughters come home and look helplessly through the kitchen cabinets saying, “She’s done it again!”

I always tell them that things are so much better organized now.

“But you said that last time,” they remind me.

“I know,” I giggle playfully. “But I really mean it this time.”

I suppose one of those online personality tests would have an explanation for Rearrangers. They’d probably say, “You may prefer new experiences to routine and security. Ingenuity and a pragmatic approach to problems is your way of solving them.”

I love personality quizzes. They validate our quirks.

  1. I also like to rearrange. My honey notices major furniture changes, but is oblivious when I switch arround the wall art, knickkancks, etc. Case in point: A month ago, he kept telling me I should pick some lilacs. He repeated this mantra one morning. I politely told him to look at the center of the small kitchen island he was standing beside. A vase of lilacs had been sitting there for two days!

  2. We can relate to the “rearranging” quirk. When relatives visit our home, they look for something that is not in the same place that it was before. It is nice to know that we are not alone in this particular quirk. 🙂

That is a nice picture of you and your mother.

    1. Thanks. I was trying to remember your remark yesterday when you were looking for something in the cabinet. It made me laugh but I couldn’t remember it when I wanted to write this post. 🙂

  4. I love this post, Jewel. That is such a good picture of you and your mom. I have not seen her in what seems like a long time, but am always amazed at how they just keep going! Have a wonderful day!
