The STUNNING Bride

This post is about the classic Scripture, Proverbs 31, and asks the daunting question, “Who can find a virtuous woman?”

If you’re a woman, wanting to be good and righteous, the qualities of such a woman can be downright scary.

But I read something recently that gave me hope. It raised another possibility for the meanings of the Proverbs Thirty-one Woman.

Maybe the word pictures of the domestic wife could also be a type of something spiritual, such as, the Bride of Christ.

In one light-bulb-moment, instead of the focus of the virtuous life being on me, my husband’s bride of thirty-eight years, it shifted to something far above me. Suddenly, Proverbs 31 seemed possible through the enabling power of Christ BECAUSE I am a part of His Bride!

Consider this:
Throughout the Bible God uses our familiar earthly concept of marriage to illustrate His spiritual union with His Bride, the Church, and so, I do not believe its a stretch of the imagination, or un-Biblical, to consider the Virtuous Woman as a spiritual type, in addition to the physical type.

The STUNNING Bride

10. Who can find a virtuous Church, (the Bride of Christ,) for her price is far above rubies. She is bought with the priceless blood of Jesus.

Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that Great Shepherd of the Sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, Make you perfect in every good work to do his will…. (Hebrews‬ ‭13‬:‭20-21‬ KJV)

11. The heart of her Husband doth safely trust in her. He desires to –

“come unto her and make (His) abode with her.” (John‬ ‭14‬:‭23‬ KJV)

12. She does Him good and not evil all the days of her life.

Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; (‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭13‬:‭4-5‬ KJV)

13. She occupies her time working to advance her Husband’s Kingdom.

“….Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. (‭Matthew‬ ‭28‬:‭18-20‬ KJV)

14. She is like the merchants’ ships, inviting souls from both near and far to the Feet of Jesus.

… And… save with fear, pulling them out of the fire… (Jude‬ ‭1‬:‭23‬ KJV)

Can anyone live the lofty goals of the Proverbs 31 Woman? The answer to that seems quite obvious, that, no, those virtues are much too perfect for human effort.

But can we, as blood-washed saints attain to her challenge? Of course! Through the enabling power of the Holy Spirit we are filled with the virtues of Christ. Because of Him, virtue flows from us in life-giving graces as we go about our day to day domestic business.

Stunning!
